What is the Career Vectors System?

The revised CVS is a new, structured, data-gathering process designed to provide you with in-depth information about yourself and possible career options to consider.

You can use this information in three ways:

  1. To gain greater insight into your vocational interests, skills and abilities, work-related personality characteristics, and strengths and development needs
  2. To identify occupational possibilities to explore
  3. To develop and enhance your career potential.

The CVS is a self-assessment of major factors related to one’s career success and satisfaction including interests, skills, and personality characteristics.

The instrument is composed of 3 major processes:

  1. A Self-Assessment Process
  2. An Occupational Exploration Process
  3. A Development Process

The Different Forms of the CVS

The CVS is made up of two forms–a detailed, comprehensive version and a shorter, basic version.

Basic Version

The Basic Version is an abridged version, and contains 15 shorter clusters of information regarding one’s interests, skills, personality traits, and occupational possibilities. Also provided are summary profiles to enable you to have a record of your assessment results that you can use as you plan and manage your career.

Comprehensive Version

The Comprehensive Version of the CVS is for individuals who want to engage in a more in-depth, thorough self-assessment process of major factors related to their career success and satisfaction. This version is for people who want a much more detailed understanding of themselves and their occupational preferences.

The Comprehensive Version of the CVS is made up of two parts. Part I provides an introduction to the career development process, reviews the goals of the CVS, and contains an overview of the CVS Self-Assessment, Occupational Exploration and Development Process. Part II consists of the Six Career Vector Assessment Scales and also includes a group of Summary Profiles to provide a record of your CVS major themes and patterns for future career decision-making and planning.

It should be noted that the CVS Comprehensive Version is a process that is not geared for general use. It was designed specifically for professionally-oriented individuals and advanced students who wish to engage in a comprehensive assessment and development process and are willing to spend the time and effort needed to achieve an in-depth understanding of themselves in career-related terms.

In this version, you will also be provided with a more thorough coverage of the CVS Occupational Exploration Process and career possibilities and options that you may wish to explore.
